01 · Overview

About this trip

A short, deliberately empty add-on for people who have just spent a week getting up at five.

One night in Stone Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most interesting urban hour in Tanzania: carved doors, the old fort, the spice market and the seafront where the whole town eats in the evening. Then three nights on whichever coast suits you.

Nothing here is compulsory. The point of the extension is that the schedule stops.

Prices and what moves them

Every quote is written for the dates and the number of people travelling, because park fees, season and vehicle sharing move the figure more than anything else. We itemise it: park fees, accommodation, vehicle, meals.

Day 01

Fly to Zanzibar, Stone Town

Arrive from Arusha or a Serengeti airstrip, transfer into Stone Town and spend the afternoon walking it — ideally with a guide, because the history here is not obvious and parts of it are uncomfortable.

14 · Questions

Asked about this trip

North for swimming at any tide and for sunsets; east for space, kitesurfing and quiet; south-east for the fewest people. We will match it to what you want.
Yes, one. It is genuinely fascinating and genuinely busy, and most people are ready for the beach the next morning.
Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. Beachwear is fine at the beach; covering shoulders and knees in Stone Town and the villages is basic courtesy.
The long rains, April and May, when many smaller hotels close. Seaweed farming affects parts of the east coast at low tide year-round.
