01 · Overview

About this safari

A trip for people who want to get out of the vehicle, and who are more interested in how this country works than in ticking off five animals.

Lake Eyasi is home to the Hadzabe, one of the last hunter-gatherer peoples in East Africa, and to the Datoga, who are pastoralists and blacksmiths. A morning with either can be genuine or it can be a staged transaction, and the difference is whether you go early, stay a while, and treat it as a visit rather than a show. We arrange it the first way.

The Ngorongoro highlands walking is real walking — crater rims, forest and Maasai grazing land, with a ranger where one is required. Manyara at the end gives you the wildlife without pretending that is all the trip was about.

14 · Questions

Asked about this trip

It can be, elsewhere. Done properly it is arranged in advance, paid transparently, goes at dawn when the group is genuinely hunting, and does not involve dressing anyone up. Ask us how it is arranged and we will tell you plainly.
Moderate. Empakaai is a steep descent and a harder climb back, at around 2,500 m. The rim forest walks are easy. Nothing is technical.
Inside the conservation area, yes, for most walks — it is a legal requirement and it is included in the quote.
Walking usually has a minimum age of twelve in the conservation area. Younger children can do the village and forge visits.
