01 · Overview

About this climb

Meru is the mountain most people fly past on the way to Kilimanjaro. It is a beautiful, demanding climb, and the best acclimatisation walk in the country.

The route starts in Arusha National Park, which means the first hours are spent walking past giraffe, buffalo and warthog with an armed ranger — a legal requirement, and a completely different way to begin a climb.

The summit ridge is narrow and spectacular: you walk up the rim of a collapsed volcano with the ash cone below you, and arrive at Socialist Peak at 4,566 m for sunrise with Kilimanjaro floating above the cloud to the east.

Many people climb Meru first and Kilimanjaro a few days later. It is the single most effective preparation there is.

14 · Questions

Asked about this trip

Steeper and more exposed, especially the summit ridge, but much shorter and 1,300 m lower. Most people find summit night on Meru tough and summit night on Kilimanjaro tougher.
Because the lower slopes are in a national park with buffalo and elephant. The ranger walks with the group and it is a park requirement, not an upsell.
If you have the days, yes. Allow two or three rest days in between. It is the best acclimatisation available and a fine climb in its own right.
Yes — Miriakamba and Saddle are hut camps with bunks and a dining room, so no tents are needed.
