01 · Overview

About this trip

Not everyone wants five nights on a mountain. These are day walks on and around Kilimanjaro that get you into the forest and up onto the moorland, sleeping in a hotel bed every night.

The first day goes up the Marangu route to Mandara Hut and the Maundi Crater, which is the best short walk on the mountain: rainforest, colobus monkeys, and a crater rim with a view towards Kenya. The second climbs onto the Shira Plateau, high above the tree line, where the landscape stops being tropical altogether.

The third day is off the mountain: Materuni village on the lower slopes, its waterfall, and the coffee that grows on the volcanic soil here — picked, roasted and ground while you wait.

Park fees are charged per day for the walks inside the park boundary, which is why a day hike on Kilimanjaro is not as cheap as it sounds.
