The Northern Circuit

Tarangire, Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti — how the classic route fits together.

Herd of elephant Serengeti Tanzania Africa

01 · The circuit

Four parks within a day’s drive of Arusha, usually done in one loop — and usually done too fast.

The standard northern circuit runs Arusha → Tarangire → Lake Manyara → Ngorongoro → Serengeti and back. The parks are genuinely different from each other, which is what makes the loop worth doing rather than picking one place.

The most common mistake is compressing it. A six-day version spends more time driving between parks than watching anything in them. Adding two nights changes the trip completely, and costs less than most people assume, because the expensive part — getting to Tanzania and into the parks at all — is already paid.

03 · Getting it right

Four decisions that matter more than the route

01

Give the Serengeti the nights

If something has to be cut, cut a night off the parks near Arusha, not off the Serengeti. It is the longest drive and the largest place.

02

Match the Serengeti sector to your month

Ndutu in February and Kogatende in August are different trips. Booking “the Serengeti” without choosing a sector is how people miss the migration by four hours of driving.

03

Consider flying one leg

Driving out and flying back from the Serengeti saves a full day of road and usually costs less than an extra night would.

04

Sleep inside the parks where you can

Gate-to-gate driving from a town lodge eats the first and last hour of light, which is exactly when the animals move.
