01 · Where you stay
A lodge trades immediacy for comfort. You give up being pitched in the middle of the action; you get a generator, a pool and a room that does not move.
Permanent tented camps sit between the two: canvas walls and a proper plumbed bathroom, on a deck, in the same place year after year. For many people this is the ideal — the sound of the bush with none of the compromises.
Location matters more than the star rating. A lodge on the crater rim is minutes from the descent; one an hour away in Karatu is cheaper and costs you the early light.
02 · The detail
What you get
Canvas with plumbing
A raised deck, a proper bathroom, and a mess and bar that stay put. Usually unfenced and escorted after dark, like a mobile camp.
Rooms, pools and reliable power
Hot water whenever you want it, a pool for the middle of the day, and often a spa. Larger, and consequently busier.
Inside the park or outside the gate
Inside costs more and buys you the first and last hour of light. Outside is cheaper and adds an hour of driving at each end of every day.
