When to go

Festive Season Safaris

Christmas and New Year in the bush, and the supplements that come with it.

Zebras and wildebeests in the Ngorongoro crater

01 · The season

Late December is green, busy and expensive, and the herds are arriving back on the southern plains just as you get there.

The short rains have passed, the country is green, and the wildebeest are moving down towards Ndutu. It is a genuinely good time to travel, quite apart from the holiday.

Almost every camp applies a festive supplement over Christmas and New Year, typically from around the 20th of December to the 3rd of January, and many require minimum stays across those dates.

02 · Month by month

What to expect

01

Green country and building herds

The southern Serengeti and Ndutu fill through the month ahead of calving.

02

Festive supplements

Charged by the camps, not by us. Amounts and dates vary by property — To confirm against current rates.

03

Minimum stays

Many camps impose them over the holiday, often four or five nights.

04

Christmas in camp

Camps make a real effort — a tree of sorts, a long dinner, and staff who are away from their own families to do it.

03 · Practical

Planning around it

Earlier than any other date in the calendar. The holiday window sells out first.
The wildlife is excellent regardless. Whether the supplement is worth it depends on whether the dates are fixed for you anyway.
Yes, and Zanzibar is busy and lively over the holiday. Same supplement logic applies.
