01 · The experience

Almost everyone wants to finish on a beach. The trick is getting there without spending two of your days in vehicles and airports.

The efficient version flies you from a Serengeti airstrip straight to Zanzibar, usually with one stop, instead of driving all the way back to Arusha first. It costs more in flights and saves a day and a half.

The other decision is how long the beach gets. Three nights is a rest; five is a holiday; anything less is a long transfer for one swim.

02 · What it involves

How the two halves fit

01

Safari first

Early mornings while you still have energy, and the expensive part of the trip done while you are sharp.

02

Fly, do not drive back

Serengeti airstrips connect to Zanzibar. Driving back to Arusha to fly out costs a full day of your holiday.

03

Choose the coast for the tides

East coast for reef and drama, north for swimming at any hour, Pemba for quiet and diving.

04

Leave a buffer before the flight home

One night near the airport at the end removes the risk of a delayed light aircraft costing you an intercontinental flight.

04 · Practical

Practical

Nine or ten nights total. Five or six on safari, three or four on the coast.
Zanzibar for variety and Stone Town, Pemba for diving and emptiness.
June to October, and January to February. April and May are wet everywhere.
Strict, usually around 15kg in soft bags. Hard suitcases are refused. Excess can often be stored in Arusha.
