01 · The experience
The phrase comes from colonial hunting, where it described the five animals most dangerous to shoot on foot. It has nothing to do with rarity or with what makes a good day out.
It survives because it is a tidy list, and because it is genuinely useful shorthand for planning: the five are spread across different habitats, so a trip that can realistically produce all five is a trip that covers enough ground.
Four of the five are straightforward in northern Tanzania. The fifth — rhino — is the one that decides your itinerary, because in practice it means the Ngorongoro Crater.
02 · What it involves
Where each of the five is realistic
Lion — everywhere, and easily
Resident prides in the Seronera valley, in Tarangire, on the crater floor and throughout the Serengeti. Most people see lion on their first full day.
Elephant — Tarangire above all
Dense along the Tarangire River in the dry season. Also common in the Serengeti and in the Ngorongoro forests, and in the south in real numbers.
Buffalo — common, and underrated
Large herds on the crater floor and across the Serengeti. An old solitary bull is one of the more genuinely dangerous animals you will pass.
Leopard — patience, and the right habitat
Riverine forest along the Seronera and Grumeti rivers. Seen most often in trees during the day. Nobody can promise you one.
Rhino — the crater, essentially
Black rhino in Ngorongoro is the reliable option, usually at distance. Small numbers exist elsewhere but are not something to plan around.
