Stories

Machame or Lemosho

Two routes, and the days that decide between them.

Mountaineers reaching Mount Meru summit

Most people climbing Kilimanjaro end up choosing between these two. The honest difference is days and crowds, not scenery.

Machame

Six or seven days, starting on the southern slopes. It is the most popular route on the mountain, which is both a recommendation and a warning — the camps are busy and the paths are worn.

The profile is good: the Lava Tower day climbs to around 4,600 metres and descends to sleep lower, which is exactly what acclimatisation wants. The Barranco Wall on the following morning is a scramble that looks alarming from below and is straightforward once you are on it.

Lemosho

Seven to nine days, starting further west and crossing the Shira Plateau before joining the Machame route. The first two days are quiet, forested and genuinely beautiful, and you meet the crowds only later.

The extra days are the point. An eight or nine-day Lemosho gives your body more time at altitude than any version of Machame, and the summit statistics reflect that.

Choosing

  • If you have six days and a fixed budget: Machame.
  • If you have eight or nine: Lemosho, without much hesitation.
  • If quiet matters to you more than cost: Lemosho, or the Northern Circuit.
  • If huts rather than tents are non-negotiable: Marangu — but understand you are trading success rate for a mattress.

What neither route changes

Summit night. Both join the same final push from Barafu, leaving around midnight, in the cold and the dark, for five or six hours of very slow walking to the crater rim at Stella Point and then on to Uhuru. It is the hardest part of either route and it is identical on both.

On cost

A longer route costs more because every day is another day of park fees, food, and wages for a crew that considerably outnumbers the climbers. If a quote for a long route looks unusually cheap, ask where the saving is being made — it is usually from the crew.
